Many of you may be wondering what I mean by, Correcting Corrections, and what this book entails. In this book, I look to correct the way that society approaches the corrections system.
Are we just putting those that are of sound mind and body that have broken the law in prison, or are we also putting those away that are not of sound mind and body who have also done wrong yet cannot be aware of their wrongdoing? I know we are doing both.
In this book, I also look for various ways to identify people that need mental health care, how to treat them before they get into trouble with the law. I also look briefly at how we might be able to correct issues from early on in society to prevent troubled teens with signs of mental illnesses from becoming just another statistic, bound to a troubled life in the cycle of the system.
I also discuss barriers to treatment and why some people end up sicker. We need to correct corrections and treat the mentally ill inmates better, allow them the opportunity to get the right help they need. We need to stop closing mental health facilities in neighborhoods, despite how poor some neighborhoods may be. In fact, we need to open more of them – that’s something that we should see on a ticket when a politician is running. Although maybe seldom spoken about, this is so important. People are dying. Sometimes, for menial crimes and offenses, and they are dying in horribly barbaric ways that could have so easily been prevented.
It is through my own professional journey that I have been able to witness firsthand what happens when a mentally ill inmate is not given the proper care. It is wrong and it is sad – hard to stomach. Those that are intellectually disabled that have committed crimes are still people, and should never be made to be degraded to such a degree as I have described prior, in the preface.
